The mission of the Lustgarten Foundation is to advance the scientific and medical research related to the diagnosis, treatment, cure and prevention of pancreatic cancer. Because of the location of the pancreas, physical examination is not likely to reveal findings. When abnormal cells grow out of control a tumor is formed. Typically a diagnosis is not made until the tumor is large enough to interfere with the function of other nearby organs. The late diagnosis makes treatment more difficult.
